The Best Time to Plant a Tree By Vanessa Teo – (April 2016)
This is Vanessa Teo, sharing with you the story of inspiration for the startup - AgromeIQ and how it got to where it is today. It all started in my final year of postgraduate studies while at UBD | IBM Center in Brunei Darussalam. I was finishing up writing for my PhD in Agricultural Systems Modelling that focuses on identifying yield gaps in farms systems. I wanted to help the rice farmers of Brunei to grow more effectively. But it dawned upon me, “these farmers are never going to read this and apply it unto their farms. It won’t make them grow any better because they don’t have time to go through research papers and reports”.
Fundamentally, we researchers innately focus on knowing every single detail on a very specific subject, but at the end of the day will such depth of knowledge benefit humanity? At the end of the day, will my research benefit those farmers on the fields that need it the most? At that point, after finishing my PhD thesis, I wanted to be the change that I wanted researches to be; create something useful using the depth of their expertise. It wasn’t too late for me because, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now”.

100-Startup Bootcamp by DARe By Vanessa Teo – (October 2016)
We were selected to be apart first ever 100-day Startup Bootcamp developed by Darussalam Enterprise (DARe) in Brunei. This was an opportunity for us to dive deep into the business and to refine our strategies and refining our business model into a viable startup as we will be presenting to a panel of international VCs and angel investors from the region in which we raised our first seed funding of $150,000 from an angel investor.
Joining the DARe Startup Bootcamp was an extremely useful and enlightening programme for me not only as a business but also as a person in so many ways. I was able to create a strong support system of entrepreneurs and to focus on creating my own core team. The mentors I learned from and the skills I gained and the people I meet propelled me to new heights faster than I ever thought possible. These mentors and advisors have been where we were and they are determined to help your business have its chance.
